Week 18 - Wednesday 31st May

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

After a week off, it was good to see 12 able bodies on show this evening. Ashey pulled out late, but luckily we managed to replace him with deputy Max. Blessed with playing outside, unlike the oven conditions of inside pitches all players were keen to get started.

TEAMS:
BIBS – ANDY, JAMES, CHRIS B, GARNO, RYAN & MAX.
SHIRTS – SIMON, BEATTS, AILES, JAKE, GAZZA & STEF.

The match looked like a one sided contest early on, new boy Max immediately on the score sheet as the Bibs cruised into a 3-0 lead. Jake and Ailes got their mojo going for the Shirts and soon pegged it back to 3-3. The Shirts were playing some great one touch stuff, Stef, Simon and Beatts all linking up well. Andy Creech was called on many times to save and keep the scores level. On the break Ryan was lethal enjoying the off the ball running from James and Max. Players were giving their all and goals were flying in from every angle.

An innocuous tangle between Gazza and Garno left the later with a dead leg which restricted the senior vets game to hobbling pace. This coincided with a fantastic spell for the shirts. 7-2 down, they pounced on two defensive errors to level, then Ailes twice unpicked the Bibs defence to score a couple of brilliant individual goals and take their team into a 9-7 lead.

The Bibs were all over the place and again Andy had to make various saves, one outstretched from Gazza and a stop with his face, point blank at the feet of Simon. Eventually as the clock ticked down, a smash and grab raid by Chris B, and James levelled the score again.

Beatts pounced on an error to whack in number 10 for the shirts, only to see Max hit the Shirts 10th goal at the other end.

Only a few minutes left now, both goal mouths took a beating and it looked like the game was ending in a draw. One long pass later it was all over, Ryan had rocketed the ball past an outstretched Stef to seal the win for the Bibs………. . FINAL SCORE – BIBS 11 – SHIRTS 10.

COMEDY MOMENTS – Simon’s shot that hit Andy in the chops.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Got to be Ailes this week …top performance with some great goals.

Week 17 - Wednesday 17th May

ELEVENS’S FOR EIGHT

Only just scraped a game this week, various excuses for absence amongst the whole squad. Culminating a few hours before kick-off with Jake and Ailes featuring in a car accident preventing them from starting tonight. Jake assures me its only bruises they have so hopefully they will be back soon. Get well quick boys, all the lads send their regards…………We have done it before and no doubt we will do it again . A punishing game of 4 on 4.

TEAMS:
BIBS - JAMES STAMBACK, STEF, D’LOW & GARNO.
SHIRTS - JONNIE, SIMON, GAZZA,& ASHEY.

Fast and furious game this one. Every player scored a cracker, all gave 100% effort, most hit the wood work, all missed a sitter and everyone pulled off a super save when it was their turn as goal keeper.

The Bibs stayed in front right till the very end. The shirts pounced on a three minute nightmare spell for the Bibs, Jonnie using his skill and pace to score or set up a team mate. This left a grand stand finish with only one goal separating the teams. Stef held firm in goal for the Bibs, but he was finally beaten by a ball coming back off the boards that Jonnie swept home.

All square with only minutes to go. Shot after shot rained in on both goal areas, Gazza and Ashey saving certain winners from James and D, low. Old duffer Garno leaping to his right one handed to turn a long ranger from Simon round the post. One last shot from Simon cannoned off the shins of the keeper and that was that. ……. . FINAL SCORE – BIBS 11 – SHIRTS 11.

COMEDY MOMENTS - Ashey’s looping finish ( too good to rule out !!!) . Loads of goal mouth gaffs from everyone this evening.
MAN OF THE MATCH - This week’s unsung hero is …. . Mr run your socks off D’LOW. He also got a few fine goals tonight …. well done mate.

Week 16 - Wednesday 10th May

BLOCK BUSTING BIBS

The warmest weather for football of the season so far. Pre match we had 13 available, so struggling with an injury Gazza took a well-earned rest. Unfortunately Andy had work commitments a few hours before kick-off leaving 11 able bodies. So a game of 5 v 6 was sorted out. On paper the teams looked even enough.

TEAMS:
BIBS - JAKE, RYAN, STEFF, JAMES & GARNO.
SHIRTS - ASHEY, SIMON, BEATTS, CHRISTIAN, JONNIE & D’LOW.

The Bibs smashed this one…. out of the blocks the quickest, keeping their shape and sticking to the game plan. Ryan got a bag full, with Jake supplying the passes. James blocked and tackled and should have had more goals if he had had his shooting boots on. Stef had a blinder too, scoring a great individual goal and linking the play all evening. Old vet Garno chipped in with a couple too, as the opposition struggled to get to grips with the Ball.

The Shirts were expected to use the pace of D’Low and Christian to wear down the tiring Bibs as the match wore on. Jonnie would supply the attacks, Ashey would bang in the goals with Beatts and Simon holding the middle. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Bibs looked jaded and lack lustre . Rarely using the extra man advantage. Simon did rally the troops with some fine strikes and Ashey once again dispatched a couple of super goals. D’Low ended his personal goal drought but these highlights for the Shirts were small consolation.

The last 10 minutes added insult to injury as every break, or miss placed pass produced another Bibs attack or goal. Let’s hope for even sides next week. ……FINAL SCORE – BIBS 17 – SHIRTS -7

COMEDY MOMENTS - The Name calling and despair within the Shirts team, when passes went astray.
MAN OF THE MATCH - Could have been any of the Bibs, but this week Stef takes the award …. well done mate.

Week 15 - Wednesday 3rd May

SUFFERING SHIRTS

Another 5 a side this week, with our younger vets playing their end of season 11 a side games. A welcome return to D’Low after finishing his exam. Another game for James Stamback following on from his run out last week. Other regulars missing Beatts, Stef, Christian and Ryan.

TEAMS:
BIBS - ANDY, GARNO, JAMES, SIMON & JAMES “S”.
SHIRTS - ASHEY, GAZZA, JONNIE, D’LOW & CHRIS B.

Perhaps one of those nights to forget for the shirts, two up after five minutes, super striker Ashey ghosting in unmarked to score a couple of crackers. Then the wheels well and truly fell off.

Gazza made his usual lung busting runs, but his shots were off target. Jonnie jinked and linked with D’Low but again the radar was just out of sync. Chris Bowden timed a run to perfection to slot in a 3rd, but the night belonged to the marauding Bibs. James “S” got their first three and there were further hat tricks for James Garner, Simon Law and Garno. Andy Creech in the Bibs goal had plenty of saves to make as the unlucky shirts tried in vain to get back in the game. Tired legs added insult to injury late on as the Bibs continued to get the run of the ball and make every shot count.
FINAL SCORE - BIBS 16 - SHIRTS 5

COMEDY MOMENTS - D’low’s crunching tackles with James and Simon leaving him flat out on the turf.
MAN OF THE MATCH - This week’s champagne goes to James Stamback for an all-round excellent performance.
