Outside again this week, a few degrees colder than our last outing. Only 10 bodies managed the roll call, and rush hour traffic made for a familiar late start. Once we all got going the match was another close affair.
BIBS - GARNO, ANDY, JAKE, JAMES AND STEF.
SHIRTS - GAZZA, AILES, BEATTS, SIMON AND D’LOW.
All the lads had to run around this week just to keep warm, hats and gloves the order of the day. The Bibs were in front from the off with the shirts playing catch up. Stef and James starting the scoring with Jake setting things in motion then adding some goals himself. Simon and Beatts had their shooting boots on for the Shirts with Gazza and D’Low smashing in some crackers.
Unfortunately midway through the match Ailes pulled his groin so had to retire in nets. This gave the Bibs an unfair advantage ad they started to extend their lead. In order to even things up Super Keeper Andy Creech was swopped over to play outfield and let Gazza take a breather in nets, Ailes went in Goal for the Bibs. This made for a more competitive finish to the match.
Gazza’s Goalkeeping was inspired, diving all over the place saving shot after shot. One outstanding palm round the post at full stretch to deny Garno a long ranger was unbelievable. Eventually he was beaten, then the cheeky bugger ran up the other end and scored. All too late. The Bibs managed to keep their lead at the final whistle.
FINAL SCORE - BIBS 12 - SHIRTS 10.
D’Low’s Last kick of the game sending the ball out of the ground. He had a rough trip through the jungle to retrieve the ball.
Man of the Match
Gaz, absolutely awesome for a man coming up to his 62nd Birthday …. . whoops 52nd sorry mate.
Due to a lot of pitches being block booked this year, we kind of get Hobson's choice. This week we were outside on pitch No. 14. Another full complement of players and a late inclusion of Jake made for 13 vets to contest the bragging rights. The last man to arrive was Stef, so he played a half each for both teams.
SHIRTS - GAZZA, SIMON, BEATTS, ASHEY, JAKE, D. LOW & STEF
BIBS - ANDY, CHRIS B, JAMES, AILES, CHRISTIAN & GARNO
Once every one was warmed through in these damp and tricky conditions the game was fast and furious. The ball fairly zipped off the surface. The bibs controlled the first half of the match leading 6-4, before Stef was swapped over to the Shirts for the last 25 minutes. Stef scoring for the Bibs prior to his move. Jake whacked in a couple of screamers on his 2017 debut. Beatts and Gazza also slotted home fine finishes and Ashey was once again on the score sheet.
These efforts would have doubled had it not been for the goalkeeping of Andy Creech in the Bibs goal. Save after save kept the Shirts second half onslaught at bay.
On the break, Ailes, James and Christian increased the goal tally for the Bibs, with Garno and Chris B, going close after flowing moves.
The pressure increased the Shirts finally using the extra man advantage. Simon and D’Low took the game within two goals, but time was running out. Dogged defending and once again superb goalkeeping from Andy meant that the bibs just held on for a slender win.
Excellent game, nice for a change being outside, so much so that we are under the floodlights next week too.
FINAL SCORE - BIBS 14 - SHIRTS 10. (Same score every week!!)
Everybody had a “Bambie on ice“ moment tonight.
Man of the Match
Super Keeper Andy Creech, safe pair of hands, don’t drop the imaginary Champagne.
Court number one was the court of choice again and once we'd turfed off the young oiks we were ready to go. Ted and Beatts arrived 5 mins late so we kicked off without them and they joined in later.
SHIRTS - GAZ, ASH, CHRISTIAN, SIMON, BEATTS, & D LOW.
BIBS - GARNO, STEF, CHRIS B, ANDY, JAMES & TED
Yet again a really competitive match and I kept out of it by going in goals initially. Unfortunately I was undone by a ball underneath me as I dived. . . too slow! Christian was out of the starting block well and truly with a great jinking run and a contender for goal of the season. A left footed curler from out side the area into the postage stamp round the goalie. Impressive.
The rest of the game played out as a fast tit-for-tat game with both sides breaking and scoring. I'd say pretty much everyone had a goal or two. Even the old lads did well with some good finishing all round.
It was all a case in the end who had the best breaks to nab a few goals and it was us Shirts who managed to get our noses in front. Hard fought and entertaining, well done all.
FINAL SCORE - SHIRTS 14, BIBS 10
Unfortunately Ted was the man in the spotlight first, losing his trainer and taking an age to put it on as we played around him. Then getting the ball fair and square in the knackers, crumpling in a heap, then staying in that position for 5 minutes. Was he dead or a alive? He lived.
Man of the Match
Christian had a great game with many great runs and goals tonight. Good man, it's yours.
Week 1 - Wednesday 4th January
2017 TURKEY RUN
Not a bad turn out for our first game of Walton Wednesdays 31st Season of 5 a side football. From the regular squad of sixteen bodies, Twelve players rallied to the banner. Early Kick off 7. 00pm which will probably be when we play for the foreseeable this year
SHIRTS - ASHEY, JONNIE, CHRISTIAN, D LOW, SIMON & BEATTS.
BIBS - JAMES, GARNO, GAZZA, STEF, ANDY & RYAN.
Fast and frenetic for the first fifteen minutes. Loads of shots at both ends but no cigar. Eventually Ashey ghosted in un marked to score the first Walton Wednesday goal of 2017. The Bibs then went 2-1 a head both goals gifted to Ryan who finished in style. This lead was kept for the rest of the evening. Gazza got in on the act with a classic angled drive and later in the session Garno smashed in a long ranger. This meant that the three founding fathers of this football team with a combined age of 154 all got on the score sheet. Beatts rallied his team to draw level on two or three occasions during the match. He himself scoring some crackers. Simon once again was frustrated by Andy in the Bibs goal. The times Andy was beaten by the Shirts, the post and bar came to his rescue. D Low and Christian ran their socks off and Jonnie threaded passes through like a Pro. Not enough to stop the power of Stef and James adding to the Bibs goal tally. FINAL SCORE - SHIRTS 10 - BIBS 14.
Stef ‘s clumsy challenge that left Simon prostrate on the floor…… free kick given. Beatts clipped by James ……No free kick given… hilarious.
